Survey
Four groups of beetles were represented, weevils and snout beetles (Curculionidae),
ground beetles (Carabidae), leaf beetles, flea beetles and rootworms (Chrysomelidae)
and seed weevils, (Apionidae). Over 150 species were recorded. These type
of beetles (Coleoptera) are extremely important in the diets of farmland
birds.
The most common beetle was the Pea & Bean Weevil, Sitona lineatus
, which occurred 12 times more commonly than the next commonest beetle,
even though most crops were winter wheat or winter oilseed rape. The next
most common were Holotrichapion pisi (Apionidae), Bembidion
guttula, and Trechus quadristriatus ( ground beetles), Chaetocnema
concinna Beet flea beetle, Sirocalodes depressicollis (weevil
or snout beetle) and Demetrias atricapillus a ground beetle.
There were 30 beetle species where only a single representative had
been found.
