Methods

Food sources

Various types of bird food sources were measured during the SAFFIE experiment. Plants produce seeds, or act as nectar sources for insects, which are both important in birds diet, so it was important to check the numbers of different weed species. The different habitats within the field - crop, patches and margins - all have different vegetation structures, which support different minibeasts that also form part of the bird diet.

Territories and foraging

Nests

The fate of eggs and chicks were montored not only for skylark but other arable birds - yellow wagtail, meadow pipit, dunnock, blackbird, song thrush, common whitethroat, yellowhammer, corn bunting, reed bunting, chaffinch and linnet.

More detailed information will be available in the SAFFIE final report
